Notion is a workspace app from Notion Labs for documents, wikis, databases and project boards. The desktop app runs on Windows and macOS; a free plan exists for individuals, with paid plans for teams.
Notion combines documents, tables and boards into pages that link to each other. Small offices use it for a company wiki, meeting notes, client lists and simple project tracking, all in the same workspace.
Building blocks
- Pages: Documents made of blocks such as text, headings, checklists, images and embeds.
- Databases: Tables that can be shown as a board, calendar, list or timeline, with filters and properties.
- Templates: Ready-made layouts for meeting notes, roadmaps and task trackers.
- Sharing: Invite teammates to a workspace or share a single page.
Which desktop installer?
- The Download button opens Notion’s official desktop page.
- macOS: A Universal build works on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs; separate builds for each are also listed.
- Windows: The Universal installer covers x64 and ARM64 PCs. MSIX and .exe packages are offered for each architecture, mainly for IT departments.
- Sign in with your Notion account; the workspace loads from the cloud.
There is no official Linux desktop app; Linux users can use Notion in a browser. Mobile apps exist for Android and iOS.
Free and paid
Notion has a free plan for personal use. Team features such as more guests, larger file uploads, longer page history and admin controls are part of paid plans; see Notion’s pricing page for current limits.
Notion stores your data in its cloud rather than as files on your disk. If you prefer local files, Obsidian is a good contrast. To save web pages into a workspace, use the Notion Web Clipper.
Pros
- Docs, wikis and databases in one workspace
- Many ready-made templates
- Native ARM64 builds for Windows and Mac
Cons
- No official Linux desktop app
- Data lives in Notion's cloud, not local files
