Standard Notes is an end-to-end encrypted notes app, now part of Proton, for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web. The free plan includes encryption and unlimited device sync; paid plans add richer note types and storage.
Office notes sometimes hold things that should stay private: client details, access instructions or HR matters. Standard Notes encrypts every note on your device before it syncs, so the service only ever stores encrypted data.
The free Standard plan
According to Standard Notes’ plans page, the free plan already includes:
- End-to-end encryption of notes and tags.
- Unlimited device sync across web, desktop and mobile.
- Offline access, plain-text notes and tags.
- Password protection for individual notes.
- Two-factor authentication and daily encrypted email backups.
- Full data export, encrypted or as plain text.
Paid plans
- Productivity (90 USD a year): Adds the Super note type with Markdown, rich text, checklists and code, spreadsheets, daily notebooks, folders, the web clipper and one year of note history.
- Professional (120 USD a year): Adds 100 GB of encrypted file storage, sharing the subscription with up to five accounts and the longest revision history.
Installing Standard Notes
- The Download button opens the official download page.
- Choose macOS (Intel or Apple Silicon), Windows, or Linux (AppImage). Android and iOS apps and a web app are also offered.
- Create an account. Pick a strong password and keep it safe: because of the encryption, a lost password cannot simply be reset with your data intact.
The source code is published on GitHub. A password manager such as KeePassXC is a good place for the account password.
Pros
- End-to-end encryption on the free plan
- Unlimited devices for free
- Open-source code
Cons
- Rich note types and folders need a paid plan
- Free plan keeps note history for the current session only
