Simplenote is a free note-taking app from Automattic for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web. Apps, syncing, backups and sharing are free; notes are plain text with optional Markdown.

2 min read

Not every note needs formatting, folders and attachments. Simplenote is built for quick text: phone numbers, meeting points, drafts and checklists that should be on your phone a second after you type them on the PC.

What it offers

  • Instant sync: Notes update across your devices automatically, with no sync button.
  • Tags and search: Tag notes and filter them as you type.
  • Version history: Every change is backed up, so you can roll a note back to an earlier version.
  • Markdown: Write in Markdown and switch to a formatted preview.
  • Publishing and sharing: Publish a note to a web link or share it with someone to edit together.

Download and setup

  1. The Download button opens the official Simplenote site, which links to every version.
  2. Windows, macOS and Linux apps are offered, plus Android and iOS apps and a web version. The Linux builds are published on Automattic’s GitHub.
  3. Create a free account and your notes start syncing.

Free means free

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, states that Simplenote’s apps, backups, syncing and sharing are all free. There is no paid tier to unlock. The trade-off is scope: there are no images, attachments, notebooks or rich-text formatting.

When to choose something else

For long documents, linked notes or a knowledge base, Obsidian is a better fit. If you need end-to-end encryption for sensitive notes, look at Standard Notes instead.

Pros

  • Completely free, including sync
  • Very fast and simple
  • Version history for every note

Cons

  • Text only: no images or attachments
  • No folders or notebooks, only tags

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Simplenote store images or files?

No. Simplenote is limited to text notes, with optional Markdown formatting. Use another app if you need attachments.

Can I recover an older version of a note?

Yes. Simplenote keeps a history of changes, and you can restore an earlier version of any note.
