Obsidian is a note-taking and knowledge base app that keeps notes as plain Markdown files on your device. The current version is 1.14.5, released on October 22, 2026; it is free for personal and commercial use.
Obsidian treats your notes as ordinary text files in a folder you control. That means no lock-in: if you stop using the app, your notes are still readable in any text editor.
Key features
- Local Markdown files: Notes live in a folder (a “vault”) on your device.
- Links between notes: Connect ideas with [[wikilinks]] and see backlinks for every note.
- Graph view: A visual map of how your notes connect.
- Plugins and themes: Thousands of community plugins add calendars, task lists, kanban boards and more.
- Canvas: An infinite board for arranging notes, images and links.
How to download and install

- Pick your system. The Windows installer is about 342 MB; macOS and Linux (AppImage, deb, tar.gz) builds are also available, and mobile apps are in the app stores.
- On first launch, create a new vault or open an existing folder of Markdown files.
Paid add-ons
Obsidian is free for all purposes, including work, and a commercial license is optional. Sync (encrypted syncing between devices) and Publish (hosting notes as a website) are optional paid services; you can also sync the vault folder with any tool you already use.
