LibreOffice is a free, open-source office suite developed by The Document Foundation. The current version is 26.8.1; it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and can open and save Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.
If you need to write an essay, a letter, a budget spreadsheet or a slide deck and would rather not pay for a license, LibreOffice is a strong choice. One installation gives you six separate applications.
What’s in the suite?
- Writer: A word processor that opens and saves DOCX files and exports to PDF in one click.
- Calc: A spreadsheet app with XLSX support, pivot tables and charts.
- Impress: For building presentations; works with PPTX files.
- Draw, Base and Math: Diagrams, small databases and formula editing.
Which version should I pick?
The official site offers two branches. 26.8 is the newest branch with the latest features. 26.2 has been tested for longer and is the stable branch recommended for business use. Since 2024, version numbers follow a year.month pattern, so 26.8 means the August 2026 branch.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the download page on libreoffice.org, with your operating system already selected.
- The main installer comes with an English interface. If you want the menus in another language, also install the “translated user interface” pack from the same page (on Windows, interface languages are already included in the installer).
- The “Typical” setup option is enough for most people.
Good to know
Office files that rely on complex macros or very specific formatting can shift slightly when opened. For important documents, exporting to PDF before you send them is the safest route.
Pros
- Completely free, no license key
- Compatible with Microsoft Office files
- Built-in PDF export
Cons
- Formatting can shift in complex Office documents
- Files that rely on complex macros may not behave identically
