Evernote is a note-taking app from Evernote Corporation for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and the web. The free plan is limited to 50 notes, one notebook and one synced device; Starter and Advanced plans remove those limits.

2 min read

Evernote collects notes, scanned documents, web clippings and to-dos in one searchable place. The desktop app is where longer writing and organizing are most comfortable.

What you can do with it

  • Notes and notebooks: Rich-text notes grouped into notebooks and spaces, with tags for cross-cutting topics.
  • Attachments: Store PDFs, images and documents inside notes.
  • Web clipping: Save articles with the Evernote Web Clipper browser extension.
  • Tasks: Add to-dos with due dates directly inside notes.
  • Search: Find notes by keyword across everything you have saved.

Installing the desktop app

  1. The Download button opens Evernote’s official download page.
  2. Choose Windows or macOS and run the installer.
  3. Sign in or create an Evernote account; your notes sync from the cloud.

Free plan limits

The free plan has firm limits, according to Evernote’s plan comparison: 50 notes, 1 notebook, 1 GB of storage and sync on only one device. That is enough to try the app but not for daily office use.

  • Starter: 1,000 notes, 20 notebooks, 5 GB of storage and 3 synced devices.
  • Advanced: Unlimited notes, notebooks and storage within fair-use safeguards.
  • Team plans: Flexible (per seat) and Unlimited (enterprise) add admin controls and shared spaces.

Paid plans come with a 7-day free trial. Prices are shown at checkout and vary by region.

If those limits do not suit you, Joplin can import Evernote export files (.enex) and is free, and Simplenote offers free unlimited syncing of plain notes.

Pros

  • Strong search across notes and attachments
  • Web clipper and document storage in one place
  • Tasks built into notes

Cons

  • The free plan allows only 50 notes and one device
  • Useful daily features sit behind paid plans
