KeePassXC stores your passwords in an encrypted file that stays on your own computer. There is no account and no cloud service involved, so you decide where the database lives and how it is backed up.

Key features

  • Encrypted database: Passwords are kept in a KDBX file, compatible with other KeePass-format apps.
  • Browser integration: An official extension fills in logins in Firefox, Chrome, Edge and other browsers.
  • Password generator: Create strong passwords or passphrases with the rules you choose.
  • Two-factor codes: Store TOTP secrets and generate one-time codes inside the app.
  • Passkeys and SSH agent: Save passkeys and load SSH keys into your system’s SSH agent.

How to download and install

  1. The Download button opens the official download page on keepassxc.org.
  2. Windows: Use the MSI installer (about 66 MB for x64), which needs the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. winget, the Microsoft Store and a portable ZIP are alternatives.
  3. macOS: Download the DMG for Apple Silicon or Intel. Linux: the Flatpak is recommended; AppImage and distribution packages are also offered.

Backups and multiple devices

Because nothing is synced for you, keep backups of your database file. To use it on several devices, place it in a folder you already sync and open it with a KeePass-compatible app on each device. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 are limited to version 2.7.12.

Pros

  • Fully offline, no account needed
  • Browser integration and TOTP codes
  • Free and open source

Cons

  • You handle syncing and backups yourself
  • No official mobile app

Frequently Asked Questions

Does KeePassXC sync between devices?

Not by itself. You can keep the database file in a cloud or sync folder of your choice and open it from each device.

What happens if I forget the master password?

The database cannot be recovered without it. There is no reset option, so choose a master password you can remember and keep backups.
