uBlock Origin Lite (uBOL) is a free, open-source content blocker for Chrome from Raymond Hill, the author of uBlock Origin. It is built on Manifest V3 and blocks ads and trackers right after installation.
If you search the Chrome Web Store for uBlock Origin today, you will not find the classic extension. Its developer lists it as removed from the store on 31 August 2026, the date Google set for taking down all remaining Manifest V2 extensions. The version that remains for Chrome is uBlock Origin Lite, rebuilt from scratch for Manifest V3.
What uBO Lite blocks out of the box
The default ruleset matches uBlock Origin’s familiar default filters:
- uBlock Origin’s own built-in filter lists
- EasyList for ads
- EasyPrivacy for trackers
- Peter Lowe’s ad and tracking server list
More rulesets can be switched on from the options page; open it with the cog icon in the popup.
Why it is so light
uBO Lite is entirely declarative. It hands its rules to Chrome, and the browser does the filtering and the CSS/JS injection itself. The extension’s own process only wakes up when you open the popup or the options page, so it uses no CPU or memory while pages load.
How to install it
- The Download button opens the official uBlock Origin Lite listing on the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome and confirm the permissions prompt.
- Pin the extension from the puzzle-piece menu if you want quick access to its popup.
Lite is not the old uBO
Because Manifest V3 limits what blockers can do, uBO Lite is not a one-to-one copy of the classic extension, and some advanced tools from uBlock Origin are missing. If ads slip through on a site, report it with the chat icon in the uBOL popup. Classic uBlock Origin is still available for Firefox; see our Firefox guide.
Pros
- Works immediately with uBlock Origin default filter lists
- Uses no CPU or memory while filtering
- Free and open source, no data collection declared
Cons
- Fewer advanced tools than classic uBlock Origin
- Manifest V3 limits some filtering techniques
