Video Speed Controller is a free, open-source Chrome extension by Ilya Grigorik that adds keyboard shortcuts and an on-video speed indicator to any HTML5 video or audio. It is installed from the Chrome Web Store.

2 min read

Many video players hide their speed setting in a menu or cap it at 2x. Video Speed Controller puts the control on the video itself and on your keyboard, so you can race through a slow lecture or slow down a fast coding tutorial without hunting for settings.

How it works on the page

Once installed, the extension shows a small speed indicator in the top-left corner of any HTML5 video. Hover over it to reveal buttons for faster, slower and rewind, or use the default shortcuts:

  • S and D: decrease or increase the playback speed.
  • R: reset to normal speed.
  • Z and X: jump back or forward 10 seconds.
  • V: show or hide the controller.

It works on sites that use standard HTML5 media, including YouTube, Netflix and local files opened in the browser, and it handles audio as well as video.

Settings worth changing

The options page lets you remap every shortcut, add modifier keys and change the step size. Speeds range from 0.07x to 16x. You can also set a default speed for specific domains, keep your last speed across tabs and sessions, and move the indicator to another corner if it covers something important.

Installing it

  1. Click Download to open the extension’s page on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Choose Add to Chrome and confirm.
  3. Reload any tab that already had a video open, then press D to test it.

The project is open source on GitHub, and its store listing states that it does not collect or use your data. If you also watch a lot of YouTube, SponsorBlock pairs well with it.

Pros

  • Works on almost any HTML5 video or audio
  • Every shortcut is customizable
  • Per-site default speeds

Cons

  • Players that do not use standard HTML5 media are not supported
  • The on-video indicator can get in the way until you move it
