Adblock Plus is a free ad blocker for Chrome from eyeo GmbH, available since 2006. It blocks ads and third-party trackers; by default it allows ads that meet the Acceptable Ads Standard, which you can disable.
Adblock Plus (ABP) has been around since 2006 and is maintained by eyeo GmbH in Berlin. It blocks pop-ups, video ads and banners, and it also blocks third-party trackers. One thing sets it apart from many other blockers, and you should know about it before installing.
Acceptable Ads is on by default
Out of the box, Adblock Plus shows some non-intrusive ads that comply with the Acceptable Ads Standard. The developer says this helps keep content free for users. If you would rather see no ads at all, you can turn Acceptable Ads off at any time in the extension’s settings; the official opt-out instructions are on adblockplus.org.
Free and Premium features
- Free: blocking of ads and third-party trackers, protection from malicious ads, and your own choice of what to block and what to allow.
- Premium (paid): blocks extra annoyances such as autoplay videos, newsletter pop-ups and survey requests, and hides cookie consent banners.
How to install Adblock Plus
- The Download button takes you to the official Adblock Plus listing on the Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome. Chrome will warn that the extension can access your browsing data; eyeo explains on the listing that this is the standard message for content blockers.
- Open the ABP settings to review Acceptable Ads and your filter lists.
Privacy note
The developer discloses on the store listing that it does not collect or use your data. Do not stack ABP with a second ad blocker such as AdBlock; pick one.
Pros
- Long-running, actively updated ad blocker
- Tracker blocking included for free
- Flexible allow and block settings
Cons
