AdBlock is a Chrome ad blocker from AdBlock, Inc. The core blocking of ads and third-party trackers is free; an optional Premium upgrade adds extras such as hiding cookie banners and distractions.
AdBlock, with its red stop-hand icon, is one of the longest-running ad blockers for Chrome. It is separate from Adblock Plus, although the names are easy to confuse. Its developer states that it is built for Chrome’s current Manifest V3 platform.
Free features
- Ad blocking: pop-ups, banners and video ads, including on YouTube and Facebook.
- Tracker blocking: third-party tracking can be disabled to make it harder for advertisers to follow you.
- Malicious ads: blocking ads also cuts the risk from ads that carry malware or phishing.
- Custom rules: advanced filters, an allowlist for sites you want to support and a dark mode.
What Premium adds
AdBlock offers in-app purchases. The paid Premium features include blocking distractions such as autoplay videos and animated GIFs, hiding cookie consent banners, and replacing ads with images. You do not need Premium for normal ad blocking.
Installing AdBlock
- Use the Download button to open AdBlock’s official Chrome Web Store page.
- Click Add to Chrome. Chrome warns that the extension can read and change data on websites; a content blocker needs that access to remove ads from pages.
- Click the AdBlock icon on any site to pause blocking or add the site to your allowlist.
Data and privacy
On its store listing the developer discloses that it does not collect or use your data. Run only one ad blocker at a time; two blockers working on the same page often cause sites to break. If you prefer an open-source option, uBlock Origin Lite is an alternative.
Pros
- Blocks ads and trackers for free
- Easy allowlist for sites you want to support
- Developer declares no data collection
Cons
- Cookie banner hiding and some extras require Premium
- Easy to confuse with Adblock Plus
