Return YouTube Dislike is a free, open-source browser extension that shows estimated dislike counts on YouTube videos, using archived data and votes from extension users. It is installed from the Chrome Web Store.

2 min read

A quick look at likes versus dislikes used to tell you whether a tutorial was worth your time. YouTube stopped showing dislike counts publicly and removed them from its API on December 13, 2021. Return YouTube Dislike puts a number back next to the thumbs-down button.

Where the numbers come from

The count you see is an estimate, not YouTube’s official figure. The project combines archived like and dislike data collected before the API change with the votes cast by people who use the extension. Its developers say the data is most accurate for popular videos; small videos uploaded after December 2021 may show rougher numbers, because fewer extension users have voted on them.

What changes on YouTube

  • A dislike count appears beside the dislike button, in the same place it used to be.
  • Your own likes and dislikes help improve the estimates for everyone.
  • Nothing else about the page changes, so it does not get in the way of normal viewing.

Installing it

  1. Click Download to open the Chrome Web Store page.
  2. Choose Add to Chrome.
  3. Reload any open YouTube tab and the dislike count appears.

The source code is public on GitHub, and the project also has a website at returnyoutubedislike.com. The store listing states that the developer will not collect or use your data. For more YouTube tweaks, SponsorBlock skips sponsor segments, and you can also get the official YouTube app for your phone.

Pros

  • Brings back a dislike count in its original place
  • Open-source code on GitHub
  • No other changes to the YouTube page

Cons

  • Counts are estimates, not official figures
  • Less reliable on small or new videos

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the dislike counts exact?

No. They are estimates built from archived data from before December 2021 and from votes by extension users, so they can differ from YouTube’s internal numbers.

Why are counts on small videos less accurate?

Newer videos with few viewers have little archived data and fewer votes from extension users, so the estimate has less to work with.
