Mozilla Firefox is a free, open-source web browser developed by Mozilla. It runs on Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, Linux, Android and iOS.

1 min read

Firefox is one of the few major browsers that is not built on Google’s Chromium engine. It is made by Mozilla, a non-profit organization, and its source code is open for anyone to inspect.

What does Firefox offer?

  • Enhanced Tracking Protection: Blocks many cross-site trackers, social media trackers and cryptominers by default.
  • Add-ons: Ad blockers, password managers, translation tools and themes from the official add-ons site.
  • Firefox account sync: Bookmarks, history, open tabs and saved passwords follow you between your computer and phone.
  • Reader view and screenshots: Strip a cluttered article down to its text, or capture part of a page without extra software.

How to download and install

  1. Firefox’s official download page detects your system and offers the matching build.
  2. On Windows, run the downloaded installer; it fetches and installs the browser in a few moments.
  3. On first launch, Firefox offers to import bookmarks and passwords from the browser you used before.

Updates and the ESR edition

Firefox updates itself in the background, so you rarely need to download it again. Organizations that prefer fewer feature changes can use the Extended Support Release (ESR), which receives security fixes while new features arrive less often.

Pros

  • Strong tracking protection out of the box
  • Large add-on library
  • Independent engine, not based on Chromium

Cons

  • A few websites are tested mainly on Chromium browsers
  • Can use a lot of memory with many tabs open
