Brave is a free, open-source web browser developed by Brave Software. Built on Chromium, it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

1 min read

Brave is built on Chromium, the same engine behind Chrome, but it blocks ads and trackers before a page even loads. Because there is less to download, many pages feel lighter, and you do not need to install a separate ad blocker.

What sets Brave apart?

  • Brave Shields: Blocks ads, trackers and many fingerprinting scripts by default; you can relax it per site with one click.
  • Chrome extensions: Most extensions from the Chrome Web Store install and work as they do in Chrome.
  • Private windows with Tor: An optional private window routes traffic through the Tor network for extra anonymity.
  • Optional extras: Features such as Brave Rewards, the built-in wallet and the AI assistant can be ignored or turned off.

Setting up Brave

  1. Get the installer for your operating system from brave.com’s download page.
  2. On Windows, run the installer; it downloads the latest version and sets it up automatically.
  3. On first launch, Brave can import bookmarks, passwords and extensions from your previous browser.

If a site breaks

Brave’s source code is published under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. If a site breaks because of blocking, lowering Shields for just that site usually fixes it.

Pros

  • Ads and trackers blocked by default
  • Works with Chrome extensions
  • Open source

Cons

  • Extra features such as the wallet and Rewards add clutter
  • Aggressive blocking can break a few sites

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Brave use Chrome extensions?

Yes. Brave is based on Chromium, so most extensions from the Chrome Web Store work in it.

Do I have to use Brave Rewards or the crypto wallet?

No. Those features are optional. You can use Brave as a regular browser and switch them off in the settings.
