If you run a website, sooner or later you need to copy files to the server. FileZilla is the classic way to do it: your computer on the left, the server on the right, and you drag files between them.

What can FileZilla do?

  • Several protocols: Connects over FTP, FTP over TLS (FTPS) and SFTP.
  • Site Manager: Save the address, port and login details of each server so you can reconnect in one click.
  • Transfer queue: Queue up large uploads, resume interrupted transfers and limit speeds.
  • Directory comparison: Highlight files that differ between your local folder and the server.

How to download and install

  1. The Download button opens the official FileZilla Client download page on filezilla-project.org.
  2. Pick the installer for your system. The 64-bit Windows installer is about 12.7 MB.
  3. Run the installer and read each screen carefully, declining anything you did not intend to install.
  4. Open File → Site Manager, add your server and click Connect.

Good to know

Whenever your host supports it, choose SFTP or FTPS instead of plain FTP, because plain FTP sends your password unencrypted. FileZilla Server is a separate program; most people only need the Client.

Pros

  • Supports FTP, FTPS and SFTP
  • Handy Site Manager for saved servers
  • Reliable transfer queue with resume

Cons

  • Dated interface
  • Cloud storage services require the paid Pro edition
