Steam is Valve’s free gaming platform and client for buying, installing and playing PC games. The installer is offered for Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux, and the Windows client requires Windows 10 or later.

1 min read

Most PC games, including many free-to-play titles, are installed through Steam. The client is free: you only pay for the games you choose to buy.

What does the Steam client offer?

  • Library and updates: Install your games and let Steam keep them up to date automatically.
  • Steam Chat: Text and voice chat with friends and groups.
  • Workshop: Download player-made mods and items for supported games.
  • Community hubs: Discussions, guides, screenshots and game news in one place.
  • Controller support: PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo controllers work in many games.

Setting up Steam

  1. The Download button opens the official Steam page on steampowered.com, where you click Install Steam.
  2. Run the installer, then sign in or create a free account.
  3. Use the Store tab to find games and the Library tab to install them.

Windows support and account safety

Valve ended Steam support for Windows 7 and 8, so the client now needs Windows 10 or later. Protect your account with Steam Guard in the Steam Mobile App, and be wary of messages offering free items through links: Valve never asks for your password outside Steam itself.

Pros

  • Huge game library with automatic updates
  • Workshop mods and community features
  • Free client and account

Cons

  • Runs in the background and uses resources
  • Not every game supports macOS or Linux

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Valve ended support for Windows 7 and 8, and the client now needs Windows 10 or later.

Does Steam work on Mac and Linux?

Yes. Valve offers a macOS installer and a package for SteamOS and Linux, though not every game supports those systems.
