1 min read

Discord started as a voice chat app for gamers and has grown into a place for all kinds of communities, from study groups to open-source projects. The desktop app is free and works alongside the mobile apps on the same account.

What can you do on Discord?

  • Servers and channels: Join communities organised into text and voice channels.
  • Voice and video: Drop into a voice channel or start a video call with friends.
  • Screen sharing: Stream your game or desktop to friends in a call.
  • Direct messages: Private chats and small group conversations.

How to download and install

  1. discord.com/download lists every desktop build.
  2. Choose your system: Windows (x64 or ARM64), macOS, or a Linux package (deb, rpm, tar.gz or pkg.tar.zst).
  3. Install, then sign in or create a free account. Mobile apps are in the App Store and Google Play.

Good to know

The free version covers everything above. Nitro is an optional paid subscription with perks such as larger uploads and custom emoji everywhere. Be careful with links promising “free Nitro” from strangers; they are a common scam.

Pros

  • Free voice, video and screen sharing
  • Same account on desktop and mobile
  • Large communities for almost any interest

Cons

  • Busy servers can be noisy and distracting
  • Some extras are locked behind Nitro
