ChatGPT search is OpenAI’s official Chrome extension that sets ChatGPT search as the default search engine in Chrome, so address-bar searches go to ChatGPT. You must be logged in to chatgpt.com to use it.

2 min read

If you already ask ChatGPT more questions than you type into a search engine, this extension saves a step: whatever you type into Chrome’s address bar goes straight to ChatGPT search.

What it does

The extension makes ChatGPT your default search engine in Chrome. Instead of a page of links, you get an answer written in natural language, with links to the web sources it used, such as news articles and blog posts. OpenAI says ChatGPT search can also give timely information like sports scores, news and stock quotes.

Still need Google sometimes?

Type !g followed by your query in the address bar, for example “!g weather Berlin”, and the search goes to Google instead.

Before you install

  • You must be logged in to chatgpt.com for ChatGPT search to work.
  • The extension changes your default search engine. Chrome may ask you to confirm the change.
  • To undo it, remove the extension or pick another search engine in Chrome’s settings.

The listing states that the extension itself does not collect or use your data; how ChatGPT handles your searches is covered by OpenAI’s privacy policy, linked from the help article on ChatGPT search.

Installing it

  1. Click Download to open ChatGPT search on the Chrome Web Store. Check that the publisher is OpenAI.
  2. Add it to Chrome and confirm the search engine change.
  3. Sign in at chatgpt.com, then type a question into the address bar.
