Claude (Claude in Chrome) is Anthropic’s official Chrome extension that lets Claude read pages and act in the browser from a side panel. It requires a paid Claude plan and is not supported on other Chromium-based browsers or on mobile.

2 min read

A lot of everyday work happens on web pages with no export button: vendor portals, admin dashboards, booking forms. Claude in Chrome lets you describe a task in a side panel; Claude then reads the page, clicks, types, navigates and fills forms while you watch and decide what happens next.

What people use it for

  • Pulling information out of pages that have no export option, for example invoice totals from several vendor portals into a spreadsheet.
  • Filling forms and doing repetitive data entry.
  • Following a process across many tabs; tabs you drag into the Claude tab group can be worked on together.
  • Working through an inbox and calendar.
  • Scheduled tasks that repeat browser work on a schedule.

For developers, it can read console errors, network requests and the DOM, which pairs with Claude Code for a build-test-fix loop.

Where you direct it from

The side panel works on its own. You can also drive the extension from the Claude desktop app for Mac or Windows, or from Claude Code. Side-panel conversations are saved, and your skills and connectors are available there too.

Staying in control

Anthropic warns that websites can hide instructions that try to redirect Claude. By default Claude can ask before acting, one site at a time, and can’t reach sites you haven’t approved. An optional automatic-approval mode uses a separate safety check on consequential actions. Anthropic recommends starting on sites you know and reading each permission prompt. On Team and Enterprise plans, admins decide whether the extension is allowed and on which sites.

Requirements and setup

  1. Subscribe to any paid Claude plan.
  2. Click Download to open the extension on the Chrome Web Store and add it to Google Chrome.
  3. Sign in with your Claude account, open the side panel and grant permissions when prompted.

It isn’t supported on other Chromium-based browsers or on mobile. For AI search in the address bar, compare ChatGPT search.

Pros

  • Acts on pages that have no export or API
  • Asks for permission site by site
  • Works with the Claude desktop app and Claude Code
