Snappy Driver Installer Origin (SDI Origin) is a free, open-source, portable driver installer for Windows developed by Glenn Delahoy. The current version is 2.0.6; it supports Windows XP through Windows 11 and can install drivers offline from separately downloaded driver packs.
A freshly installed Windows PC sometimes has no working network adapter, which means it cannot download the very driver it needs to get online. Snappy Driver Installer Origin solves that chicken-and-egg problem: it runs from a USB stick and installs drivers from packs you downloaded beforehand on another computer.
Why technicians keep it on a USB stick
- Fully portable: Nothing has to be installed; run it straight from a flash drive.
- Works offline: With driver packs on the stick, it can install drivers where internet access is not available.
- Wide Windows support: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10 and 11.
- Free and open source: The source code is published by the project.
Downloading the tool and the driver packs
- The Download button opens the official SDI Origin page on glenn.delahoy.com.
- Download the program archive and extract it to a folder or USB drive.
- Note that the driver packs are not included in the program download. Fetch the packs you need separately, using the options offered on the official page, before you go offline.
Using it responsibly
Before installing a batch of drivers, create a Windows restore point so you can roll back if something goes wrong. Install only the drivers your devices actually need instead of selecting everything in the list. For graphics cards, the vendor’s own tool (the NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or Intel Driver & Support Assistant) is usually the better choice, while SDI Origin is most useful for network, chipset and other hardware on machines without internet access.
Several similarly named driver tools exist, so check that you are on glenn.delahoy.com before downloading.
Pros
- Runs from a USB stick without installation
- Installs drivers offline
- Free and open source
Cons
- Driver packs are large and downloaded separately
- Interface is aimed at experienced users
