Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a free Windows utility from Wagnardsoft that completely removes AMD, NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers, including leftover registry keys, folders, files and driver store entries. Its developer highly recommends running it in Safe Mode.

2 min read

Most of the time, updating a graphics driver over the old one works fine. When it does not, for example after switching from an AMD card to an NVIDIA one or when a driver keeps crashing, Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) removes the old driver completely so you can start clean.

What DDU removes

DDU uninstalls AMD, NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers together with the leftovers a normal uninstall can leave behind: registry keys, folders, files and entries in the Windows driver store. The developer describes it as a tool for cases where the standard uninstall fails or a thorough removal is needed.

Before you start

  • Back up your data. The official guide asks you to back up important files first.
  • Have your BitLocker recovery key ready if the drive is encrypted, because it may be requested.
  • Download the new driver in advance from your GPU vendor, so it is ready after the cleanup.
  • Stop automatic driver installs. The guide suggests going offline so Windows does not download a graphics driver by itself; DDU’s options also include a setting that blocks driver downloads through Windows Update.

Running it

  1. The Download button opens the official DDU page on wagnardsoft.com.
  2. The developer highly recommends running DDU in Windows Safe Mode to minimise issues, although it is optional. Enter Safe Mode the usual Windows way first.
  3. Select your device type and vendor, then choose an action: Clean and restart for most cases, Clean and do NOT restart for systems that have had several GPUs, or Clean and shutdown when you are about to swap the graphics card.
  4. After restarting, install the driver you downloaded earlier.

DDU is a repair tool, not something to run before every routine update.

Pros

  • Removes driver leftovers a normal uninstall misses
  • Works with AMD, NVIDIA and Intel graphics
  • Separate clean, restart and shutdown options

Cons

  • Needs care: back up and follow the guide
  • Best run in Safe Mode, which takes extra steps

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to run DDU in Safe Mode?

It is optional, but the developer highly recommends Safe Mode to minimise potential issues.

When should I use DDU?

When a normal driver uninstall fails, when a graphics driver keeps misbehaving, or when you switch between GPU brands. It is not needed for routine driver updates.
