CrystalDiskMark is a free, open-source disk benchmark for Windows from Crystal Dew World (developer hiyohiyo). The latest version is 9.0.3; it measures sequential and random read, write and mixed performance on Windows XP through 11 (x86, x64 and ARM64).
Advertised drive speeds are measured under ideal conditions. CrystalDiskMark shows what your SSD, hard drive, memory card or USB stick actually delivers on your own PC, in a compact window that is easy to read and share.
What it measures
- Sequential speed: Reading and writing large continuous files, the number most drive makers advertise.
- Random speed: Many small reads and writes, closer to what Windows and applications do day to day.
- Read, write and mix: Results for reading, writing and a mixed workload.
- Three modes: Peak, Real World and Demo, depending on whether you want the drive’s maximum or a more everyday picture.
Choosing a download
- The Download button opens the download page on crystalmark.info, the developer’s site.
- Pick the Standard Edition. The Aoi and Shizuku editions work the same way with themed artwork.
- Run the installer, choose the drive at the top of the window and click All to run the full set of tests.
Read this before testing
The developer warns that benchmarking can shorten the life of SSDs and USB memory, because every run writes test data. A few runs to check a new drive are fine; running it repeatedly is not needed. Results from different major versions of CrystalDiskMark are not comparable, so compare drives using the same version. Some SSDs also score differently depending on the type of test data. If you start CrystalDiskMark with administrator rights, network drives do not appear in the list.
Supported systems are Windows XP to 11 and Windows Server 2003 to 2025; the installer and the x64 version do not support Windows XP or Server 2003.
Pros
- Quick, easy-to-read drive benchmark
- Sequential and random tests in one run
- Supports x86, x64 and ARM64
Cons
- Repeated runs add wear to SSDs and USB drives
- Results differ between major versions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does CrystalDiskMark damage my SSD?
It does not damage it, but each run writes data, and the developer notes that benchmarking may shorten SSD and USB memory life. Occasional tests are fine.
Why are my results lower than the advertised speed?
Advertised figures use ideal conditions. Free space, the interface the drive is connected to, the test mode and the type of test data all affect the result.
