Slack is a team messaging app from Slack Technologies (a Salesforce company) for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and the web. A free plan is available with 90 days of message history; Pro, Business+ and Enterprise plans are paid.
Slack replaces long internal email threads with channels: one for each team, project or client. Conversations stay searchable and new colleagues can read back through a channel to catch up.
Core features
- Channels: Public or private rooms for topics, teams and projects.
- Direct messages: One-to-one or small-group chats.
- Huddles: Quick audio or video calls with screen sharing, started from any channel or DM.
- Threads: Reply to a specific message without cluttering the channel.
- Integrations: Connect apps such as Google Drive, calendars and project tools.
Installing the desktop app
- The Download button opens Slack’s official downloads page.
- Pick Windows, Mac or Linux. Slack is also available from the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store, and as mobile apps.
- Sign in to your workspace with the email address your company uses, or create a new workspace.
Slack recommends keeping the app up to date, since older versions can cause connection problems.
Free and paid plans
The free plan is enough for a small team to try Slack, but it shows only the most recent 90 days of messages and files and limits integrations and huddle features. Paid plans (Pro, Business+ and Enterprise) keep full history and add more apps, admin controls and security features. Slack’s pricing page lists current limits.
Alternatives
For video meetings and webinars, Zoom Workplace is a common companion. For communities and voice channels, Discord is popular, and for email-based teams Mozilla Thunderbird remains a solid desktop mail client.
Pros
- Organized channels and threads
- Large catalog of integrations
- Desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux
Cons
- Free plan hides messages older than 90 days
- Paid plans are priced per user
Frequently Asked Questions
How much message history does Slack keep on the free plan?
The free plan gives access to the most recent 90 days of messages and files. Paid plans keep full history.
Can I use Slack in a browser instead of the app?
Yes. Slack works in modern web browsers, though the desktop app adds better notifications and stays open separately from your browser.
