Google Drive for desktop is Google's free sync app for Windows and macOS. It shows Google Drive as a drive or folder on your computer, with streaming or mirroring of files; storage comes from your Google account (15 GB free, shared with Gmail and Photos).

2 min read

If your office already works in Google Docs and Sheets, Google Drive for desktop brings those files into File Explorer or Finder. You can drag files in and out like any other folder, and changes sync to the cloud.

Stream or mirror?

When you set up the app, you choose how My Drive behaves:

  • Stream files: Files stay in the cloud and download only when you open them. Google says streaming uses almost no computer space. Mark specific files or folders as available offline.
  • Mirror files: A full copy of My Drive is stored on your computer and kept in sync, which needs enough free disk space.

You can also choose folders on your computer, such as Desktop or Documents, to back up to Google Drive.

Installing it

  1. The Download button opens Google’s official Drive download page.
  2. Windows: Run GoogleDriveSetup.exe and follow the on-screen steps.
  3. macOS: Open GoogleDrive.dmg, run the installer and follow the steps.
  4. Sign in with your Google account and pick streaming or mirroring.

There is no Linux version of Drive for desktop; Linux users can use Drive in a browser.

Storage

Drive for desktop is free; the space comes from your Google account. A free account includes 15 GB shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. More space is available through Google One or a Google Workspace plan.

Google Docs files appear as shortcuts that open in the browser. To work on them without a connection, add Google Docs Offline, and to save web content straight to Drive use Save to Google Drive.

Pros

  • Streaming saves disk space
  • Integrates with Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
  • Folder backup from your computer

Cons

  • No Linux version
  • Free 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Photos
