pCloud Drive is the desktop app of pCloud, a Swiss cloud storage service, for Windows, macOS and Linux. It shows cloud storage as a virtual drive; a free account is available, with Premium, Premium Plus and Ultra plans sold yearly or as lifetime plans.
Most sync apps copy files onto your disk. pCloud Drive works differently: it adds a virtual drive, and the files on it live in the cloud until you open them. That suits laptops with small SSDs and offices with large archives.
Main features
- Virtual drive: Your pCloud storage appears as a drive letter on Windows or a drive on macOS, without taking up local space.
- Sync and backup: Choose local folders to sync or back up, and recover earlier file versions.
- Sharing: Share files and folders with access controls.
- pCloud Encryption: An optional Crypto folder with zero-knowledge, client-side encryption, meaning only you hold the keys.
Downloading pCloud Drive
- The Download button opens pCloud’s official download page.
- Choose Windows, macOS or Linux. On macOS, pCloud lists macOS 12 or later.
- Install the app, sign in or create a free account, and the new drive appears.
Plans
pCloud offers a free account with a limited amount of storage. Paid plans are Premium (500 GB), Premium Plus (2 TB) and Ultra (10 TB). Each is sold as a yearly subscription or as a one-time lifetime plan, which is unusual among cloud services. The encrypted Crypto folder is a separate paid add-on; check pCloud’s pricing page for current prices.
Before you rely on it
Because files on the virtual drive live in the cloud, opening them needs an internet connection unless you sync them locally. Keep important originals in more than one place. Alternatives include Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive.
Pros
- Virtual drive saves local disk space
- Lifetime plans as an alternative to subscriptions
- Optional zero-knowledge encrypted folder
Cons
- Encryption is a paid add-on
- Files on the virtual drive need a connection to open
Frequently Asked Questions
Does pCloud Drive use space on my hard drive?
Files on the virtual drive stay in the cloud and are only downloaded when you open them, so they use very little local space. Synced folders are stored locally.
What is a pCloud lifetime plan?
It is a one-time payment for a fixed amount of storage instead of a yearly subscription. pCloud sells lifetime versions of its Premium, Premium Plus and Ultra plans.
