Odoo is a suite of business apps from Odoo SA. Odoo Community is open source under the LGPLv3; Odoo Enterprise is licensed and needs a subscription. Installers exist for Windows, Debian/Ubuntu and RPM systems, and a PostgreSQL server is required.
Odoo covers CRM, sales, invoicing and accounting, inventory, manufacturing, point of sale, websites and more, all as apps that share one database. You can rent it as a hosted service or download it and run it yourself.
Community or Enterprise?
- Odoo Community is open source (LGPLv3) and free to download. Odoo describes it as the core that Enterprise is built on.
- Odoo Enterprise adds licensed apps and features, such as extra accounting tools, payroll and Studio, along with functional support, version upgrades and hosting. Enterprise packages are only downloadable after signing in as a paying customer or partner.
Download options
The official download page offers recent Odoo versions for:
- Windows (installer)
- Debian and Ubuntu (deb packages)
- Red Hat-family Linux (RPM packages)
- Source code
Odoo’s documentation says the Windows installer is meant for testing or single-user local use and advises against running a production server on Windows. Windows may show a SmartScreen warning when you run it.
Server requirements
Every installation needs a PostgreSQL database server. The Debian package expects PostgreSQL on the same machine by default. For production, Odoo recommends a Linux server; a VM on Proxmox VE or a plain Ubuntu server are typical choices.
The mobile app
The Odoo app for Android and iPhone opens every app in your Odoo database with push notifications. Its store listing states that it supports Odoo 16 or higher (Enterprise); Community users can use Odoo in the phone’s browser instead.
For a lighter, accounting-focused alternative, see Dolibarr or ERPNext.
Pros
- Open-source Community edition
- Very wide range of business apps in one database
- Native packages for Debian, Ubuntu and RPM systems
Cons
- Many advanced apps are Enterprise-only
- Mobile app is aimed at Enterprise databases
Frequently Asked Questions
