ERPNext is free, open-source ERP software from Frappe, released under the GNU GPLv3. It is installed with Docker or the bench tool on Debian, Ubuntu or macOS and needs Python, Node.js, MariaDB and Redis.
ERPNext covers accounting, sales and purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects, HR and more. It is built on the Frappe framework and published on GitHub under the GPLv3, so you can run it on your own server without licence fees.
Two ways to install
Docker (quick evaluation). The official frappe_docker repository includes a compose file for a demo. You need Docker, Docker Compose v2 and git; after a few minutes the site is available on port 8080. The README calls this a disposable demo only, and custom apps cannot be installed on it.
bench (self-managed). bench is Frappe’s command-line tool for creating sites and installing apps. After installing bench, you create a site, fetch the ERPNext app and install it on that site. The install script sets up dependencies such as MariaDB and saves the generated passwords to a file in your home folder.
Server requirements
Frappe’s installation guide lists:
- Operating system: macOS or Debian/Ubuntu (Debian 13+ or Ubuntu 24.04+ recommended). On Windows, use Ubuntu under WSL.
- Python, Node.js, MariaDB, Redis (or Valkey), Yarn and pip, with exact versions depending on the Frappe release; version 16 needs newer versions than 14 and 15.
- cron for scheduled jobs such as backups.
- PDFs are rendered with Chromium, which bench downloads itself.
Check the guide for the version you install, because requirements change between major releases.
Managed hosting
If you would rather not run a server, Frappe offers Frappe Cloud, a paid managed service that handles installation, upgrades and monitoring.
For local experiments, Docker Desktop is the easiest way to run the demo. If you need a simpler PHP-based ERP, compare Dolibarr.
Pros
- GPL-licensed with no licence fees
- Broad ERP coverage including manufacturing and HR
- Docker demo for quick evaluation
Cons
- Production setup needs Linux administration skills
- No native Windows server support
