Akaunting is accounting software for small businesses that you can install on your own server or use as a cloud service. The source is published under the Business Source License (BSL); paid apps extend it.
Akaunting handles everyday small-business bookkeeping: invoices and bills, customers and vendors, bank accounts, transfers and reconciliation, and financial reports. It is a web application, so once it is installed on a server you and your accountant use it in a browser.
On-premise requirements
Akaunting’s help centre lists what the server needs:
- PHP 8.1 or higher (the current GitHub source requires PHP 8.2 or higher)
- Database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite or SQL Server
- Web server: Apache, Nginx or IIS, with URL rewriting (mod_rewrite on Apache)
- PHP extensions: BCMath, Ctype, cURL, DOM, FileInfo, Intl, GD, JSON, Mbstring, OpenSSL, PDO, Tokenizer, XML and Zip
The installer checks these requirements and will not finish until all of them are present. Many shared hosting plans meet them, but confirm with your host before buying.
How to install
- Download the package from the official download page (Download button).
- Upload it to your web hosting or server and create an empty database.
- Open the address in a browser and follow the setup wizard to create your company and administrator account.
Developers can instead clone the GitHub repository and install with Composer and npm; the repository notes that its asset build currently needs Node.js 18 or 20.
Licence and costs
Akaunting’s source code is released under the Business Source License, which is source-available rather than a classic open-source licence. The core application is free to use. Extra features, such as the Payroll, Inventory and Bank Feeds apps, come from the Akaunting App Store, where some apps are paid, and Akaunting also sells cloud plans.
For a desktop accounting program that needs no server at all, see GnuCash or Manager.
Pros
- Runs on ordinary PHP hosting
- Supports several databases, including SQLite
- Free core with optional paid apps
Cons
- BSL licence is not a classic open-source licence
- Payroll, inventory and other extras are paid apps
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Akaunting open source?
Its source code is public, but it is released under the Business Source License (BSL), not a traditional open-source licence. Read the licence before redistributing it.
Can I run Akaunting on shared hosting?
Often yes, as long as the host offers a supported PHP version, the required extensions, a database and URL rewriting. The installer checks these for you.
