The Monero GUI Wallet is the free, open-source (BSD-3-Clause) desktop wallet developed by the Monero community and published on getmonero.org. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, supports Trezor and Ledger hardware wallets and can run a pruned local node.
The Monero GUI Wallet is the reference graphical wallet for Monero (XMR), a cryptocurrency designed for private transactions. It is developed by the Monero community and offered on the project’s official website.
Simple mode or advanced mode
- Simple mode: For less technical users. The wallet connects automatically to a remote node, so you can send and receive XMR without downloading the blockchain.
- Advanced mode: Run your own local node and access every feature. With blockchain pruning, the node stores only about a third of the blockchain.
- Merchant page: Receive XMR for a business.
- Hardware wallets: Compatible with Trezor and Ledger devices that support Monero.
The wallet is non-custodial: your keys are stored in your wallet files and backed up by your mnemonic seed.
Platforms
Windows 64-bit (installer or zip), macOS (Intel or ARM) and Linux 64-bit. Linux distribution packages are listed on GitHub. There is no official Monero GUI app for phones; getmonero.org lists separate mobile and light wallets from other developers.
Download and verify
- The Download button opens getmonero.org/downloads.
- The Monero project strongly advises verifying the SHA256 hash of your download against the GPG-signed hashes.txt file, and provides beginner and advanced guides.
- Some antivirus programs flag Monero files; the Monero FAQ explains why.
Protect your seed
Never share your mnemonic seed or wallet keys. Monero developers and community moderators will never ask for them, and “support” accounts that reach out to you first are scams. For a lighter Monero desktop wallet, see Feather Wallet.
Pros
- Official open-source Monero wallet
- Simple mode for beginners, advanced mode with a local node
- Trezor and Ledger support
Cons
- Desktop only
- Running a local node takes time and disk space
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to download the whole Monero blockchain?
No. In simple mode the wallet uses a remote node. If you run your own node, pruning lets you keep about one third of the blockchain.
Can I use a hardware wallet with the Monero GUI?
Yes. The Monero GUI Wallet is compatible with Trezor and Ledger hardware wallets.
