MetaMask is a free, self-custodial crypto wallet made by Consensys, available as a browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge, Opera) and as iOS and Android apps. It supports Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana and other networks and works with many hardware wallets.
MetaMask is the wallet many people first meet when a website asks them to “connect a wallet”. It lives in your browser or on your phone and lets you sign in to decentralized apps and approve transactions.
Self-custody, explained
MetaMask is self-custodial: your keys are protected by a Secret Recovery Phrase that only you hold. MetaMask cannot reverse a transaction or restore your account if the phrase is lost or stolen.
Networks and hardware wallets
- Networks: Ethereum and EVM networks, plus Bitcoin and Solana, according to MetaMask’s store listing.
- Hardware wallets: The extension works with Ledger, Trezor, Lattice, Keystone and several other devices; on mobile, MetaMask lists Keystone, Ledger and NGRAVE ZERO. With a hardware wallet, keys stay on the device.
- Transaction previews: MetaMask shows what you are about to sign before you confirm.
Getting the genuine MetaMask
MetaMask’s own download page warns about cloned apps built to record your Secret Recovery Phrase. To be safe:
- Use the Download button (metamask.io/download), which sends you to your browser’s official store, for example in Google Chrome or Firefox.
- On phones, use the store links here. On the App Store the seller is ConsenSys AG; on Google Play the developer is MetaMask Web3 Wallet.
- Ignore ads and search results that point to other “MetaMask” sites.
Never share the Secret Recovery Phrase
No MetaMask employee or support agent will ever ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key. Never paste it into a website, a “wallet validation” form or a chat. Be just as careful with token approval requests from unfamiliar sites.
Pros
- Works with a very large number of dApps
- Broad hardware wallet support on the extension
- Transaction previews before signing
Cons
- Frequent target of clones and phishing
- Many trading features that beginners may not need
