Coinbase Wallet is a free self-custody wallet app from Coinbase for iOS and Android, with its website at base.app. It is separate from the Coinbase exchange app and supports networks such as Base, Ethereum, Solana and BNB Chain.
Coinbase offers two very different apps, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion. Coinbase is the exchange app, where Coinbase holds your crypto in your account (custodial). Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet: you control the keys, and Coinbase cannot move or freeze the assets in it.
Signing in and recovery
Coinbase Wallet offers several ways to secure the wallet. According to its store listing, you can sign up with an email address, a Google account or an Apple account, with recovery and multi-factor authentication, or use a recovery phrase or passkey with cloud backups. If you choose a recovery phrase, it is the only key to your wallet.
Networks
The app lists Base, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain and other networks. Token swaps are carried out by third-party decentralized exchange aggregators, and some features (such as rewards and perpetual futures) are limited by country and carry their own risks and terms.
Download the right app
- The Download button opens the official Coinbase Wallet site (base.app), which links to the stores.
- In the App Store and Google Play, the publisher name is Coinbase Wallet and the app is titled “Coinbase Wallet”. The exchange app is a different listing from Coinbase, Inc.
- Do not install wallet apps from links sent by message or social media.
Never share your recovery phrase or codes
Coinbase support will never ask for your recovery phrase, private key or sign-in codes. Anyone who requests them, or asks you to “move funds to a safe wallet”, is attempting theft. For another self-custody wallet that works across many chains, see Trust Wallet.
Pros
- Self-custody with several recovery options
- Supports Base, Ethereum, Solana and more
- Built-in protection against malicious sites
Cons
- Easy to confuse with the custodial Coinbase exchange app
- Several features limited by country
