The Tangem app is the free iOS and Android app from Tangem AG for Tangem hardware wallets (cards and a ring). Private keys are generated and stored on the card's secure chip, and you approve transactions by tapping the card on an NFC phone.
Tangem is a hardware wallet shaped like a bank card (there is also a ring). The Tangem app is the phone app you use with it: you tap the card on your phone to sign transactions.
How Tangem works
- Keys on the card: According to Tangem, private keys are generated and stored on the card’s secure element chip (certified to Common Criteria EAL6+) and never on company servers.
- Non-custodial: Tangem says it cannot access, freeze or control your funds.
- Backup with extra cards: Instead of a 12-word phrase, you can link up to three cards to the same wallet; a seed phrase remains optional for advanced users.
- No battery: The card is powered by your phone’s NFC.
- Networks: Tangem lists support for many blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, plus Web3 connections to dApps.
Buying, swapping and staking in the app go through independent third-party providers, with their own terms and fees.
Requirements
You need an NFC-capable iPhone or Android phone and a Tangem card set or ring, which is sold separately. The app itself is free.
Download safely
Get the app only through the store links on this page or from tangem.com, and check that the publisher is Tangem AG (App Store) or Tangem (Google Play). Buy cards only from Tangem or its listed resellers, never second-hand.
Protect your backup cards and phrase
Keep your backup cards in separate safe places. If you choose a seed phrase, never share it or type it into a website; Tangem support will never ask for it. For a hardware wallet with a desktop app, see Trezor Suite.
Pros
- Keys stay on a secure chip in the card
- Backup cards instead of a mandatory seed phrase
- No battery or cable needed
Cons
- Requires Tangem hardware, sold separately
- Phone-only app; needs NFC
