Backpack is a free app and browser extension from Backpack Technologies Ltd. that combines a non-custodial crypto wallet with the custodial Backpack Exchange. It is available for iOS, Android and Chrome, Brave and Edge, and supports multiple networks, including Solana and Ethereum.

2 min read

Backpack puts two different products in one app: a self-custody wallet and an exchange account. Understanding the difference is the most important thing before you use it.

Wallet vs exchange

  • Backpack Wallet (non-custodial): You hold the keys, backed up by your recovery phrase. Backpack cannot move or freeze these assets, and it cannot recover them if you lose the phrase.
  • Backpack Exchange (custodial): Assets in the exchange account are held by the company, like any exchange. You sign in with an account and are subject to its terms, verification rules and regional availability.

The app lets you move assets between the two, so always check which side you are on before sending or receiving.

Wallet features

  • Multiple networks: Manage assets across several networks, with Solana and Ethereum among them.
  • dApps and NFTs: Explore decentralized apps, DeFi positions and NFTs.
  • Hardware wallets: Connect a hardware wallet so keys stay on the device.

Yield, margin and futures products in the exchange part are high-risk and optional; nothing about using the wallet requires them.

Platforms and download

The Download button opens backpack.app/download, which lists the iPhone and Android apps, an Android APK and the extension for Chrome, Brave and Edge. In app stores, the publisher is Backpack Technologies Ltd. (App Store) or Backpack App (Google Play).

Never share your recovery phrase

Backpack support will never ask for your wallet’s recovery phrase or private key, or for your exchange password and verification codes. For a wallet that is self-custody only, see Solflare.

Pros

  • Self-custody wallet and exchange in one place
  • Hardware wallet support
  • Mobile app and browser extension

Cons

  • Wallet and custodial exchange side by side can be confusing
  • Many high-risk trading products in the same app
