Autodesk Revit is building information modelling (BIM) software for architects, engineers and contractors. It runs on Windows only and is sold by subscription; Autodesk offers a 30-day free trial.
In traditional CAD, a floor plan and an elevation are separate drawings. In Revit you build one intelligent 3D model of the building, and plans, sections, elevations and schedules are generated from it, so a change in one place updates everywhere.
What Revit is used for
- Architectural design: Walls, doors, windows, roofs and stairs that know what they are and how they connect.
- Structural and MEP engineering: Model beams, columns, ducts, pipes and electrical systems in the same project.
- Documentation: Sheets, tags and schedules that stay in sync with the model.
- Collaboration: Worksharing so several people can work on one project, plus support for open BIM formats such as IFC.
Getting the trial
- The Download button opens Autodesk’s Revit trial page.
- Sign in with an Autodesk account and complete the form.
- Download and run the installer on a Windows PC.
Autodesk advertises the Revit trial as free for 30 days. Revit is a Windows-only program; Mac users need a Windows environment to run it. It is demanding software, so check Autodesk’s system requirements for the current release before installing.
After the trial
Revit is available only by subscription. Students and educators can get free one-year access through the Autodesk Education Plan for learning and teaching.
Looking at other BIM options? Archicad runs natively on Mac as well as Windows, and Vectorworks covers architecture and landscape design.
Pros
- Drawings and schedules update from one model
- Covers architecture, structure and MEP
- Widely requested in BIM projects
Cons
- Windows only
- Expensive subscription and steep learning curve
