Autodesk 3ds Max is 3D modelling, animation and rendering software for Windows, widely used in architectural visualisation and game art. It is sold by subscription, with a 30-day free trial.
3ds Max is a long-standing choice for architectural visualisation, product renders and game assets. Its modifier stack lets you build complex models step by step and go back to change any step later.
Where 3ds Max is strong
- Modelling: Polygon, spline and parametric modelling with a non-destructive modifier stack.
- Architectural visualisation: Turn CAD and BIM data into realistic interiors and exteriors.
- Rendering: Ships with the Arnold renderer and supports popular third-party renderers.
- Animation: Character rigging, motion paths and particle effects.
Download the trial
- The Download button opens Autodesk’s 3ds Max free-trial page.
- Sign in with an Autodesk account and fill in the form.
- Install 3ds Max on a Windows PC.
Autodesk lists the trial as 30 days from the date of download. 3ds Max is Windows-only; the latest release requires Windows 11, and older Windows 10 machines are limited to earlier versions. A capable graphics card and plenty of memory help a lot in large scenes, so check Autodesk’s system requirements page for the recommended hardware before you start the trial.
Use the trial on a real project rather than a quick test: import a CAD plan, model a room and render it, so you can judge whether the workflow suits you before the 30 days run out.
After the trial
3ds Max is sold by subscription only. Eligible students and educators can get free one-year access through the Autodesk Education Plan.
If you want to learn 3D without paying, Blender is free and open source. Animators working across Windows, Mac and Linux may prefer Maya.
Pros
- Flexible modifier-based modelling
- Strong for architectural visualisation
- Arnold renderer included
Cons
- Windows only
- Subscription only
