ETABS is paid structural analysis and design software for buildings from Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI). It runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, uses cloud sign-in licenses and offers a trial through CSI's website.

2 min read

ETABS is CSI’s software for the structural analysis and design of buildings. It combines modelling, analysis, design and reporting in one interface, with building-specific tools for floors, stories and lateral systems that a general-purpose analysis program does not have.

What ETABS does

  • Analysis: the SAPFire analysis engine supports multiple 64-bit solvers, eigen and Ritz analysis, and parallel processing on multi-core CPUs.
  • Design: steel frames, concrete frames, slabs, shear walls, composite beams and columns, and steel joists, based on a range of US and international design codes.
  • Interactive database editing: model data is stored in tables that can be edited directly, which speeds up large changes.
  • BIM interoperability: exchange models with other AEC tools.

Trial and licensing

  1. The Download button opens the ETABS trial page on csiamerica.com, where you request trial access.
  2. CSI licenses ETABS in several levels; its sales page lists perpetual licenses with annual maintenance, as well as lease and non-commercial pricing.
  3. CSI has moved to Cloud Sign-in licenses; older standalone and network licenses are no longer supported.

System requirements

  • Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a 64-bit CPU
  • 16 GB RAM minimum, 64 GB recommended
  • 6 GB of disk space for installation, plus room for models
  • For DirectX graphics mode, a discrete DirectX 11/12 graphics card is recommended

ETABS is designed for buildings. For bridges, industrial structures and other general structural work, CSI’s SAP2000 is the usual choice. Detailed steel and concrete models for fabrication are often built in Tekla Structures.

Pros

  • Building-specific modelling, analysis and design
  • Supports many US and international design codes
  • Multi-threaded SAPFire solvers

Cons

  • Expensive professional licenses
  • Windows only

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ETABS run on macOS?

No. CSI lists Microsoft Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) as the supported operating system.

What is the difference between ETABS and SAP2000?

Both come from CSI and share the SAPFire analysis engine. ETABS is specialized for buildings, while SAP2000 is a general-purpose structural analysis and design program.
