Tekla Structures is a paid structural BIM application from Trimble for detailed steel, concrete and precast models. Trimble offers a 30-day free trial and subscription plans, and free access for students and educators through Tekla Campus.

2 min read

Tekla Structures is used to build highly detailed, constructible 3D models of structures: steel frames with every connection and bolt, cast-in-place and precast concrete with reinforcement. Fabricators and contractors use the same model to produce drawings, reports and data for workshops and site.

Who it is for

  • Structural engineers creating and documenting the structural design.
  • Steel detailers and fabricators producing shop drawings and fabrication data.
  • Precast and concrete contractors planning elements, reinforcement and pours.

Trimble positions Tekla Structures as material-independent, so one model can mix steel, concrete, timber and other materials.

Getting the trial

  1. The Download button opens the Tekla Structures page on tekla.com.
  2. Choose Start free 30-day trial and follow the steps.
  3. Download and install the trial version for Windows.

Subscriptions and education

After the trial, Tekla Structures is sold as a subscription. Trimble offers three material-independent subscription options aimed at different users, and paid plans connect to Trimble Connect for model sharing and collaboration.

Students and educators can get Tekla Structures free for learning through Tekla Campus, Trimble’s education portal, which also hosts training material.

Tekla Structures handles detailing and fabrication data. Structural analysis is often done in dedicated programs such as ETABS or SAP2000, with models exchanged between them. For combined design reviews, see Navisworks.

Pros

  • Very detailed, constructible steel and concrete models
  • Material-independent modelling
  • Free for students and educators

Cons

  • Subscription required after the 30-day trial
  • Complex for occasional users
