AutoCAD LT is Autodesk’s 2D-only version of AutoCAD for Windows and macOS. It is sold by subscription; Autodesk offers a 15-day free trial that cannot be extended.
Plenty of CAD work is purely two-dimensional: floor plans, site layouts, details and schematics. AutoCAD LT is Autodesk’s lower-priced edition for exactly that, using the same DWG files and familiar interface as full AutoCAD.
What AutoCAD LT does
- Precise 2D drafting: Lines, arcs, polylines, hatches and object snaps for accurate drawings.
- Annotation: Dimensions, text, tables and leaders that scale correctly on layouts.
- Reusable content: Blocks and external references keep repeated parts consistent across drawings.
- Sharing: Work with DWG files from colleagues and clients and plot to PDF.
LT versus full AutoCAD
AutoCAD LT focuses on 2D. Full AutoCAD adds 3D modelling, automation with AutoLISP and add-ons, and the specialized industry toolsets. If you never model in 3D and do not rely on custom routines, LT is usually enough.
Get the trial
- The Download button opens Autodesk’s AutoCAD LT free-trial page.
- Sign in with an Autodesk account and fill in the form.
- Download the Windows or Mac installer and run it.
The trial lasts 15 days and switches off automatically when it ends; Autodesk does not extend trials. For a one-off project, Autodesk points to a monthly subscription with auto-renewal turned off.
If you want a free 2D tool for occasional drawings, LibreCAD is open source and works with DXF files.
Pros
- Same DWG format and interface as AutoCAD
- Lower price than full AutoCAD
- Runs on Windows and Mac
Cons
- 2D only
- No AutoLISP or add-on automation
Frequently Asked Questions
