LibreCAD is a free, open-source 2D CAD program released under the GPLv2 licence. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with official builds published on GitHub.
Not every drawing needs a heavyweight CAD suite. LibreCAD is a lightweight, free program for 2D work such as floor plans, part drawings and diagrams, and it runs well on modest computers.
What LibreCAD offers
- 2D drafting: Lines, arcs, circles, polylines and splines with snapping for precise drawing.
- Layers and blocks: Organise drawings and reuse parts such as doors or bolts.
- Dimensions and hatching: Annotate drawings for printing or sharing.
- DXF files: LibreCAD uses the DXF format, which most CAD programs can read and write.
- Cross-platform: The same program on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Where to download
- The Download button opens the official LibreCAD releases page on GitHub.
- Choose the asset for your system: an EXE installer for Windows, an AppImage for Linux, or a DMG for macOS.
- Install it and set your units and paper size in the application preferences before you start drawing.
The project notes that its macOS packaging is maintained by volunteers and could use help, so the Windows and Linux builds tend to be the most polished.
Licence
LibreCAD is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2, so you are free to use, modify and share it, including for commercial drawings.
For a similar open-source tool with an optional paid edition, see QCAD. If you need 3D parametric parts, try FreeCAD.
Pros
- Free and open source (GPLv2)
- Lightweight and quick to start
- Same app on Windows, Mac and Linux
Cons
- 2D only
- macOS builds get less attention
