QCAD is a 2D CAD application for Windows, macOS and Linux that reads and writes DXF and DWG files. Its core is open source; the free Community Edition can be built from source, and a paid QCAD Professional edition is sold.

2 min read

QCAD describes itself as a professional 2D CAD system for everyone. It is aimed at technical drawings such as plans, schematics and mechanical parts, with a clean interface that is approachable for newcomers.

Key features

  • 2D drafting tools: Lines, arcs, polylines, splines, hatches and dimensions with snapping.
  • DXF and DWG: QCAD reads and writes both formats, so you can exchange drawings with other CAD users.
  • Layers and blocks: Organise drawings and reuse common parts.
  • Part library: Ready-made symbols and parts to drop into drawings.
  • Scripting: Extend QCAD with its JavaScript-based scripting interface.

The latest major release, announced on the official site, adds features such as external references (XRefs), one-click hatching and gradients.

Community Edition or Professional?

The core of QCAD is published under an open-source licence, and the source code of QCAD Community Edition is available on GitHub. QCAD Professional is a paid edition sold through the official QCAD shop, with additional tools on top of the community version. Check the official site’s comparison and licence pages before deciding.
