Microsoft Project is paid project scheduling software for Windows. Project Standard 2024 costs $679.99 and Project Professional 2024 $1,129.99 as one-time purchases in the US; the desktop app is also included with the Planner and Project Plan 3 subscription.

2 min read

Construction managers, engineers and planners still rely on Microsoft Project for detailed schedules: tasks, dependencies, durations, resources and costs, shown as Gantt charts and network views. The desktop version is the classic way to build and track those plans.

Standard or Professional?

Microsoft sells two on-premises editions as one-time purchases (US prices):

  • Project Standard 2024 ($679.99): project schedule, task and cost management, calendars and reporting.
  • Project Professional 2024 ($1,129.99): everything in Standard plus comprehensive resource management, timesheets for payroll, project tracking and invoicing, and the ability to connect to Project Server Subscription Edition.

If you prefer a subscription, Microsoft’s Planner and Project Plan 3 includes everything in Project Professional 2024 plus Microsoft Planner.

How to get it

  1. The Download button opens Microsoft’s Project plans and pricing page.
  2. Buy the edition you need, or choose a subscription plan.
  3. Install Project from your Microsoft account (or through your organization’s administrator for business plans).

Platform

Project Standard and Project Professional are Windows desktop applications; Microsoft’s FAQ on the same page lists the Windows versions required. There is no native Mac version of the desktop app.

Free alternatives

If you only need to open and edit Project files occasionally, open-source desktop tools can help. ProjectLibre is designed as a Microsoft Project replacement, and GanttProject reads MPP files. For document review on the same projects, see Bluebeam Revu, and for office documents, LibreOffice.

Pros

  • Detailed scheduling, resources and cost tracking
  • One-time purchase or subscription
  • Widely used file format in construction and engineering

Cons

  • Expensive, especially Professional
  • Windows only
