AlmaLinux OS is a free, open-source enterprise Linux distribution compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, governed by the AlmaLinux OS Foundation. Current releases are AlmaLinux 10.2 and 9.8, with images for x86_64, x86_64_v2, aarch64, s390x and ppc64le.
AlmaLinux OS is a community-owned enterprise distribution that tracks Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is used for web servers, hosting, development and lab machines where long support and compatibility with RHEL software matter.
Version 10 or 9?
The download page offers AlmaLinux 10 (currently 10.2) and AlmaLinux 9 (currently 9.8). Pick 10 for new deployments; stay on 9 if your applications or control panel have not been certified for 10 yet. There is also AlmaLinux Kitten, a pre-release line for testing what comes next, not for production.
Older processors
AlmaLinux 10 is offered in a regular x86_64 build and an x86_64 v2 build for older CPUs, which is helpful on hardware that does not meet the newer x86-64-v3 baseline. Other architectures are aarch64, s390x and ppc64le. If your CPU is recent, Rocky Linux is a comparable choice.
Which ISO?
- DVD: all packages included; no extra repositories needed during installation.
- Boot: a small network-install image that downloads packages from the internet.
- Minimal: a self-contained image for an offline, minimal installation.
Verify the download
Each ISO is listed with its SHA-256 hash, and a CHECKSUM file is provided per version and architecture. Compare the hash of your file with the published value before installing.
Write the USB and install
Rufus writes the ISO on Windows; Ventoy is handy for multi-ISO sticks. The installer erases the disks you select, so back up data and pay attention to which drive is chosen.
Pros
- Compatible with RHEL
- Separate build for older x86_64 CPUs
- SHA-256 hash listed for every ISO
Cons
- Server-oriented rather than a home desktop
- Choosing between versions and builds takes some reading
