Rufus is a free, open-source utility for creating bootable USB drives, developed by Pete Batard. The latest version is 4.15, released on June 30, 2026; it runs on Windows 8 or later and needs no installation.
Reinstalling Windows, trying out Linux or running a disk repair tool all start the same way: an ISO image written to a USB stick. Rufus does that in a few clicks and is known for being quick about it.
What can Rufus do?
- Bootable USB from ISO: Windows installation images, Linux distributions and many rescue tools.
- Partition scheme choice: Pick MBR for older BIOS computers or GPT for UEFI systems.
- Windows setup options: When writing a Windows image, Rufus can offer setup tweaks, such as creating a local account.
- Bad block check: Optionally test the USB stick for faulty sectors.
Getting started
- Rufus is published on its official site, rufus.ie.
- Most PCs need the standard x64 version (about 1.9 MB); there is also a portable build and an ARM64 build.
- There is nothing to install: run the file, select your USB drive, click SELECT to pick the ISO, then press START.
Good to know
Writing an image erases everything on the USB drive, so copy anything important off it first. Rufus runs on Windows only; on macOS and Linux, look at other tools such as Ventoy or your distribution’s own image writer.
Pros
- Tiny and needs no installation
- Fast writing speed
- Handy Windows setup options
Cons
- Windows only
- One image per USB drive at a time
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Rufus delete what is on my USB drive?
Yes. Writing an image erases everything on the selected drive, so copy important files off it first.
Does Rufus need to be installed?
No. Rufus is a single executable you run directly. A portable build that keeps its settings next to the file is also available.
