PeaZip is an archive manager for people who want more than a right-click “Extract here”. It handles a long list of formats, has a built-in file browser and offers encryption and secure deletion tools.

Key features

  • Over 200 formats: Opens and extracts 7Z, RAR, ZIP, TAR, ISO and many more.
  • Creates many formats: Writes 7Z, ZIP, TAR, GZ, BZ2, Zstandard, Brotli, WIM, ARC and its own PEA format.
  • Encryption: Password-protect archives and use two-factor authentication with keyfiles.
  • Extra tools: Split and join files, check hashes and securely delete files.

Installer or portable

  1. The 64-bit Windows download page on peazip.github.io is the project’s own.
  2. The Windows 64-bit installer is about 11.4 MB. A portable version that needs no installation is also available, as are macOS and Linux packages.
  3. During setup, choose which file types PeaZip should open and whether to add it to the right-click menu.

RAR support

PeaZip can open RAR archives, but creating new RAR files requires WinRAR to be installed on the same computer. Its interface is available in many languages.

Watch out for unofficial download sites

PeaZip’s developer warns that some websites, including peazip.com, and some Microsoft Store publishers list packages that do not come from the project. Official downloads are on the project’s site at peazip.github.io, on GitHub and on SourceForge, and SHA-256 hashes are published so you can check that a file has not been altered. The project also states that its packages contain no advertising and that neither the program nor the website collects user data, so an installer that shows offers or asks for personal details is a red flag. Under the hood, PeaZip builds on open-source engines such as 7-Zip/p7zip, Zstandard and Brotli.

Pros

  • Opens over 200 archive formats
  • Encryption and secure deletion built in
  • Portable versions available

Cons

  • Busier interface than simpler archivers
  • Creating RAR files needs WinRAR

Frequently Asked Questions

Is peazip.com the official PeaZip site?

No. The developer names peazip.com among sites listing unofficial packages. The official site is peazip.github.io, with downloads also on GitHub and SourceForge.

Can PeaZip create RAR files?

Only if WinRAR is installed on the same computer. On its own, PeaZip extracts RAR archives and creates formats such as 7Z and ZIP.
