Everything is a freeware file search engine for Windows developed by voidtools. The current version is 1.4.1.1032; it supports Windows XP through Windows 11 and indexes NTFS drives in seconds.

2 min read

Windows’ built-in search can take a while to find a file. Everything takes a different approach: it builds an index of file and folder names and then shows matches as you type, usually instantly.

Why use Everything?

  • Instant results: Results update with every keystroke, even across hundreds of thousands of files.
  • Light on resources: voidtools says about 250,000 files need roughly 35 MB of RAM and under 14 MB of disk for the index.
  • Always current: On NTFS drives, the index stays up to date by reading the file system’s change journal.
  • Search syntax: Filter by extension, size, date or path, and use wildcards or regular expressions.
  • Offline: It runs entirely on your computer.

Installation options

  1. voidtools.com’s downloads page lists several builds; the 64-bit installer suits most PCs, while x86, “Lite” and portable ZIP versions cover the rest.
  2. During setup, you can install the Everything service so that it can index NTFS drives without needing to run as administrator.

Good to know

Everything searches file and folder names by default, not the text inside documents. FAT, FAT32 and exFAT drives can be added as folder indexes. A 1.5 beta is also offered, but 1.4.1 is the current stable release.

Pros

  • Finds files by name almost instantly
  • Very small and light on resources
  • Powerful search syntax

Cons

  • Windows only
  • Does not search file contents by default

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Everything index FAT32 or exFAT drives?

Yes, but not through the live NTFS index. Such drives can be added as folder indexes instead.

Can Everything search inside files?

By default it searches names only. Content search is possible with the content: search function, but it is much slower because files have to be read.
