Rocky Linux is a free, open-source enterprise Linux distribution compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The current release is Rocky Linux 10.2; on x86_64 it requires an x86-64-v3 processor (roughly Intel Haswell or newer), 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk for a minimal install.
Rocky Linux is a community-built enterprise operating system that aims to be compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It is aimed at servers, labs and businesses that want a long-lived, predictable platform without a subscription.
Check your CPU first
Rocky Linux 10 raised the x86_64 baseline to x86-64-v3, based on the feature set of Intel’s Haswell generation (it needs instructions such as AVX, AVX2, BMI1/2 and FMA). Older processors, including some Intel Atom chips and AMD chips before the Excavator generation, are not supported. Rocky 10 also supports aarch64, ppc64le, s390x and riscv64. If your hardware is too old, AlmaLinux offers an x86-64-v2 build of its version 10.
Minimum hardware
- Minimal server: a 1 GHz 64-bit x86_64-v3 CPU (or equivalent), 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk.
- Graphical install: 4 GB of RAM or more and at least 40 GB of disk are recommended, with two or more cores for desktop use.
Images and verification
The download page offers DVD (full offline), Boot (network install) and Minimal images per architecture, with a CHECKSUM file. Compare the SHA256 value of your download with the listed one before installing; a mismatch means a broken or altered file.
Write the USB and install
Rufus writes the ISO on Windows; Ventoy is useful for keeping several server installers on one stick. The Anaconda installer will repartition disks you select, so back up data and double-check targets, particularly on machines with several drives.
Pros
- Compatible with RHEL
- Long-lived, predictable releases
- DVD, Boot and Minimal images
Cons
- Version 10 drops support for x86-64-v2 processors
- Aimed at servers rather than home desktops
