X, formerly Twitter, is a free social media app from X Corp. for Android and iOS. The official site is x.com.
X is the app that used to be called Twitter. It is built around short public posts, and people use it to follow breaking news, sports, music and whatever is trending. If you are looking for the Twitter app, this is it: the name and logo changed, but it is the same service from X Corp.
How it works
You follow accounts, and their posts appear in your timeline. A For you tab suggests posts from people you do not follow, while Following shows only accounts you chose. You can post text, photos and video, reply, repost, and send direct messages. According to the store listing you can also go live from the app.
Install and sign in
- Open Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone) and search for X from X Corp.
- Install it, then sign in with your existing Twitter username or create a new account.
- Pick a few topics and accounts to follow so the timeline has something to show.
Free, with paid options
The app is free to download and use. X also sells an optional subscription called X Premium with extra features; the prices and perks are shown inside the app and change from time to time, so read them on your own screen before buying.
Keeping the account safe
Open Settings and privacy, then Security and account access, to switch on two-factor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app over text messages. If you mostly want to read and not post, you can set the account to protected so only approved followers see what you write. For a more conversational feed built around Instagram accounts, see Threads.
Pros
- Fast route to breaking news and live events
- Follow accounts without needing a friend request
- Protected-account option for private use
Cons
- Timeline includes suggested posts and ads
- Some features need a paid subscription
