Instagram is a free photo and video sharing app from Instagram, Inc., part of Meta. It runs on Android and iOS, and its official site is instagram.com.
Instagram started as a simple way to share square photos and has grown into one of the main places people post short videos, follow friends and discover creators. Everything happens in one feed you can scroll with your thumb.
What can you do on Instagram?
- Posts and carousels: Share photos and videos on your profile, with filters and basic editing built in.
- Reels: Record or upload short vertical videos with music, effects and text.
- Stories: Post moments that disappear after 24 hours, or keep the best ones as Highlights on your profile.
- Direct messages: Chat one-on-one or in groups, send voice notes and make video calls.
- Explore: Find new accounts and content based on what you already like.
Getting started
- Install Instagram from Google Play on Android or the App Store on iPhone.
- Open the app and sign up with your phone number or email address, or log in with an existing account.
- Choose a username, add a profile photo and follow a few accounts to fill your feed.
Privacy controls
You can switch your account to private so that only approved followers see your posts. Under Settings you can also limit who can message you, hide like counts and use the time management reminders. Instagram is free; some creators offer paid subscriptions, but the app itself costs nothing.
Securing your account
Instagram accounts are a common target for takeover scams, so two-factor authentication is worth the few minutes it takes. Open Settings, go to Accounts Center, then Password and security, and choose Two-factor authentication (Instagram is gradually moving these options to Meta Account settings, so the labels may differ slightly). You can get login codes from an authentication app, which Instagram recommends, by text message, or through WhatsApp once text messages are set up. Keep the backup codes somewhere safe; they get you in if you lose your phone. Only tap Trust this device on a phone or computer that is yours. Finally, install the app only from Google Play or the App Store: modified versions offered on other websites are not made by Instagram and can put your login at risk.
Pros
- Photos, Reels, Stories and messages in one app
- Fine-grained privacy and time-limit settings
- Easy to discover new creators
Cons
- Feed shows many ads and suggested posts
- Can be hard to put down
