Duolingo is a free language learning app from US-based Duolingo, Inc. The current App Store version is 7.146.0; it runs on Android and iOS, with a Super subscription for ad-free use. Its official site is duolingo.com.
The hardest part of learning a new language is practicing every single day. Duolingo tackles that by breaking lessons into a few minutes each and rewarding your progress like a game. You can finish a lesson while waiting for the bus.
How does Duolingo work?
- Short lessons: Each lesson mixes translation, listening, matching and speaking exercises and takes just a few minutes.
- Placement test: If you already know some of the language, take a short test at the start and skip ahead to your level.
- Streaks and leagues: Your streak grows with every day you practice, and weekly leagues let you compete with other learners for points.
- Beyond languages: Alongside language courses, the app offers math, music and chess; which interface languages these are available in can vary.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens duolingo.com; you can install the app for free from Google Play or the App Store.
- When you open it, choose the language you want to learn and a daily goal (for example, 10 minutes a day).
- Create an account so your progress isn’t lost and you can continue on other devices.
Good to know
The courses on offer depend on the language you learn from; English speakers get the widest choice. On the free version, ads appear between lessons. A Duolingo Super subscription removes them and adds extra conveniences, but every lesson is available without it. The app is a great tool for building a daily habit; for fluent speaking, pair it with books, shows or real conversation practice.
Pros
- Every lesson is open in the free version
- Few-minute lessons build a daily study habit
- Streaks and leagues keep motivation high
Cons
- Ads between lessons in the free version
- Won’t make you fluent on its own
