Typing a few lyrics when you can’t remember a song’s name, building a road-trip playlist, or listening to recommendations made just for you every Monday: Spotify puts all of this in one app. You can start with a free account and move to Premium later if you want.
What’s on Spotify?
- A huge catalog: Music from around the world, with albums and artist pages.
- Personal recommendations: Weekly playlists and daily mixes based on your listening habits.
- Podcasts: Follow podcasts in the same app as your music; some shows also have video episodes.
- Switch between devices: Pick up a song you started on your phone right where it left off on your computer, TV or in the car.
How to download and install
- The Download button opens the official download page on spotify.com, which points you to the right store for your device. You can also install the app directly from Google Play or the App Store.
- Open the app and sign up for free with your email address or your Google or Apple account.
- Pick a few artists you like; the recommendations on your home screen are shaped by those choices.
Free plan vs. Premium
On the free plan, ads play between songs and some playback features are limited. A Premium subscription removes the ads, lets you download songs to listen offline and raises the audio quality. There are Individual, Student, Duo and Family plans; check the Premium page on spotify.com for current prices in your country.
Pros
- Large music and podcast library even on the free plan
- Spot-on recommendations based on your listening
- Seamless switching between phone, computer and car
Cons
- Ads and playback limits on the free plan
- Offline listening requires Premium
